U.S. stocks fell sharply on Nov. 5, led by a 7.3% drop in Nvidia, as the Nasdaq lost more than 1,000 points and the VIX climbed 40%, signaling a broad increase in market volatility.

The S&P 500 was down 2.4%, while the Dow Jones Industrial Average lost more than 700 points, a decline of over 1.3%. The Nasdaq fell more than 3.9%. The Nasdaq-100 dropped 1,300 points, or more than 4.5%, while a semiconductor index slid about 900 points, down 8.7%.

Nvidia's move marked its largest intraday decline since April 2025. The VIX, described as the U.S. stock market's fear gauge, stood at 23.28 after rising 40%. Declines across major indexes showed losses reached beyond a single company, as technology and chip shares fell alongside the S&P 500 and Dow.

The losses stretched beyond Nvidia and chipmakers, with all three major U.S. benchmarks lower. That mix of declines gives crypto traders a broad risk-off move to monitor.
