U.S. stocks briefly lost about $3 trillion in market value during the session before a partial rebound cut the estimated decline to roughly $2.5 trillion as trading continued.

About an hour after the 9:30 a.m. ET opening bell, the market’s aggregate value was down about $2.3 trillion. Losses widened as the S&P 500 fell to an intraday low near 7,394 points, down about 3.83%, and estimated market-value losses reached roughly $3 trillion.

The decline later narrowed to about $2.5 trillion as stocks recovered from the session low. That put the estimated shortfall about $500 billion below its intraday peak, while leaving it roughly $200 billion larger than the decline recorded about an hour after the 9:30 a.m. ET open.

The figures capture two measures of the sell-off: the S&P 500’s index level and an estimate of the total market value lost across U.S. stocks. The rebound reduced the reported decline but did not erase it.
