[Wall Street liquidity radar] Bitcoin’s U.S. discount clouds signal from higher institutional volume

Coinbase Prime volume rose to 15,581.53 BTC, but Bitcoin’s U.S. price discount and a VIX jump to 28.18 left evidence of stronger buying demand unclear.

Bitcoin’s U.S. price discount and a rise in equity-market volatility point to caution despite increased institutional trading activity. Higher turnover alone offers no clear signal of stronger buying demand.

Bitcoin continued to trade below overseas prices on Coinbase as institutional volume increased. The discount and heightened market volatility complicate any reading of that activity as a recovery in U.S. demand.

The Coinbase premium, which measures the price gap between U.S. and overseas markets, closed at -0.16% on November 1, -0.18% on November 2, -0.15% on November 3, -0.09% on November 4 and -0.16% on November 5. The discount widened on November 5. The live reading on November 6 was -0.14%.

A positive premium indicates a higher U.S. price, while a negative reading indicates a discount. The persistently negative daily readings provide little evidence of dominant U.S. buying demand.

Bitcoin’s Coinbase premium measures the percentage price difference between Coinbase and Binance.

Coinbase Prime, an institutional trading venue, recorded volume of 15,581.53 BTC on November 5, up from 13,202.62 BTC on November 4. November 5 turnover was worth approximately $1.18 billion at that day’s closing price.

The increase shows more trading activity through the institutional venue. Volume includes both purchases and sales, however, so the rise alone does not establish that institutions were accumulating Bitcoin in anticipation of gains.

CFTC disclosures showed leveraged funds holding 5,887 long contracts and 9,866 short contracts in CME Bitcoin futures as of October 27. Short positions exceeded longs. The figures are published weekly and describe positioning on that reporting date.

The VIX closed at 28.18 on November 5, rising 11.57 points from 16.61 on November 4.

The jump in the equity volatility gauge adds a reason for caution toward risk assets such as Bitcoin, even as institutional cryptocurrency trading activity increases.

The dollar index closed at 101.55 on November 5, up 0.04 from 101.51 on November 4. The U.S. 10-year Treasury yield stood at 4.90% as of November 4. The firmer dollar and prevailing Treasury yield add context to the cautious signals from Bitcoin’s U.S. price discount.

Taken together, the indicators suggest caution rather than clear conviction in U.S. Bitcoin demand. Whether the daily Coinbase discount narrows and equity volatility subsides will help clarify the significance of higher institutional turnover.

[Editor’s note] Wall Street liquidity radar examines U.S. Bitcoin sentiment through CME leveraged-fund positioning, the Coinbase premium, the VIX and Coinbase Prime trading volume. Together, these measures describe futures positioning, relative spot pricing, equity-market uncertainty and institutional trading activity.
