The VIX, the S&P 500 volatility index, climbed 47.14% to 24.44 on Thursday, Nov. 5, as the three major U.S. stock indexes declined, putting the gauge at its highest level since April 7.

The index gained 7.83 points, and 24.44 was also its session high. The VIX rose above the 24-point threshold. The percentage increase and point gain describe the same move, while the intraday peak matched the reported level.

The Dow Jones Industrial Average fell 1.50%, the S&P 500 dropped 2.65% and the Nasdaq Composite slid 4.25%. The Nasdaq posted the largest decline among the three, with losses across every index named in the market snapshot.

The sharp VIX rise alongside falling stock indexes points to increased risk aversion across U.S. markets. Crypto traders monitor that broader shift in market sentiment.
