The S&P 500 Volatility Index (VIX) rose 62.73% to 27.03 on Thursday as U.S. stocks fell sharply, signaling a steep increase in expected equity volatility, a key risk-off marker for crypto markets.

At 11:05 a.m. ET (16:05 UTC) on Nov. 5, the index was at 27.03, up 10.42 points. Its session high was also 27.03, and the gap to its 52-week high of 35.30 narrowed.

Declines reached all three major U.S. stock indexes. The Dow Jones Industrial Average fell 2.38%, the S&P 500 dropped 3.57% and the Nasdaq Composite slid 5.35%. The Nasdaq had the largest decline among those benchmarks; the Dow's loss was the smallest.

The VIX gauges expected swings in U.S. stocks. Its jump places the equity market in a sharper risk-off posture, a cross-market signal relevant to crypto traders. The reading describes U.S. stock volatility; it does not itself report a move in any digital asset.
