Algorithmic Selling Deepened a Sharp U.S. Stock Market Decline

CTA funds added to the pressure as buyers remained scarce at the open. Retail selling during Thursday’s first half-hour neared a late July 2024 peak.

Algorithmic and CTA fund selling intensified a sharp U.S. stock decline while buyers remained scarce at the open, adding pressure during the market’s steepest early moves.

Opening liquidity had liquidation-like characteristics. Long-positioned institutions were under pressure as hedge funds rapidly unwound large cloud-computing positions bought during a rebound, with buyers yet to enter the market.

Retail investors recorded their largest 30-minute selling burst in months during Thursday’s opening half-hour. The pace neared the peak reached during late July 2024’s retail panic selling. The burst came during the Thursday stock-market rout, which cut about $3.7 trillion from U.S. stock-market value.
