Oil futures regained ground on Nov. 5 after three sessions of losses, as traders considered whether a sweeping Democratic midterm victory could increase pressure on President Donald Trump to seek a diplomatic resolution with Iran.

The election outcome may raise the political cost of military escalation and strengthen pressure for an agreement to restore shipments through the Strait of Hormuz.

At least five tanker incidents were reported since Nov. 1, keeping the pace close to a record. Shipping disruptions continued to hold transportation costs high even as crude flows recovered significantly.

Iran is reviewing proposals related to its nuclear program. Qatar’s diplomatic efforts to avert a return to full military conflict may be making progress.
