An unnamed financial services company CEO told economic journalist Charles Gasparino that the number of hedge funds being liquidated has reached its highest level since 2009, as a technology-stock selloff fueled speculation that one or more funds were under strain.

Gasparino shared the CEO’s assessment in an X post Nov. 6. The CEO called the liquidations necessary and described them as part of a market-bottoming process, while saying further downside pressure remained.

The claim adds a count-based measure to existing market discussion of hedge-fund liquidations as a driver of U.S. stock selling. It concerns the number of funds being liquidated, not the dollar value of trading losses.
