Billionaire investor Tim Draper recently took to social media to compare Bitcoin to Microsoft during its early operating system dominance. He argued that developers are increasingly building on Bitcoin, just as they once gravitated toward Windows due to its market dominance and software integrations.
Draper recalled the rise and fall of software like Lotus 1-2-3 and WordPerfect in the 1980s. While these were once leading applications, Microsoft outpaced them by integrating Excel and Word with its Windows OS. Microsoft’s acquisition of PowerPoint further solidified its position by offering a complete suite of standardized tools. Draper suggests that Bitcoin is now playing a similar role in the blockchain ecosystem.
According to Draper, features pioneered by other blockchain projects—such as smart contracts, ordinals, and decentralized finance (DeFi) applications—are being recreated and adopted within the Bitcoin network. This shift, he claims, shows that entrepreneurs are choosing the blockchain with the "strongest gravitational pull."
Draper has long been bullish on Bitcoin, previously forecasting that its price could reach $250,000 as early as this year. In his latest post, he doubled down on his optimistic outlook, stating that Bitcoin’s value could eventually become “infinite” compared to the U.S. dollar, which he warned continues to lose purchasing power due to inflation.
As Bitcoin absorbs more innovative use cases and developer interest, Draper believes it will solidify its status as the dominant blockchain—just as Windows became the standard platform for software developers decades ago.
