Kwasi Kwarteng, the UK's shortest-serving Chancellor of the Exchequer, is stepping back into the spotlight — this time with a focus on Bitcoin, monetary history, and long-term economic strategy. Speaking candidly in a recent CoinDesk interview, Kwarteng reflected on the controversial September 2022 mini-budget that defined his brief time in office, acknowledging it was "very, very rushed" given it was introduced just two weeks after he and Prime Minister Liz Truss took power. The situation was further complicated by the death of Queen Elizabeth II just days into their tenure, compressing an already tight timeline. The budget's fallout was significant, triggering a spike in gilt yields and exposing vulnerabilities in the UK's pension sector through the Liability-Driven Investment crisis.

Despite the chaos, Kwarteng stands by the original intent of the policy. He warns that the UK has since fallen into a fiscal doom loop — consistently spending beyond its tax revenues — and cautions that rising tax burdens erode economic incentives over time. He also criticizes the short-term thinking that dominates both politics and financial markets, arguing that sustainable progress requires a longer-term perspective rather than reacting to every quarterly shift in sentiment.

These convictions now inform his views on digital assets. Kwarteng notes that while the Treasury and Bank of England are aware of Bitcoin, the UK remains hesitant to fully embrace financial innovation. He contrasts this with Paris, which he describes as increasingly forward-thinking on digital assets. He also pushed back on former Prime Minister Boris Johnson's characterization of Bitcoin as a Ponzi scheme, advocating instead for a more open and informed approach to emerging monetary systems.

Putting his beliefs into action, Kwarteng has joined Stack BTC as executive chairman. The UK-based Bitcoin treasury firm currently holds 31 BTC and has attracted notable political interest, with Reform UK leader Nigel Farage acquiring a 6% stake. For Kwarteng, this venture represents a deliberate pivot toward resilient, forward-looking economic thinking.
