Ethereum co-founder Vitalik Buterin is stepping away from his signature long-form blog posts to experiment with a new creative format: science fiction. In a recent post shared through his Farcaster account, vitalik.eth revealed that he has started writing a decentralized governance sci-fi novel, with the first two chapters already published on his personal website.
The move marks a major shift for Buterin, who has spent years analyzing blockchain governance, decentralized autonomous organizations (DAOs), voting systems, and public goods funding through technical essays. By turning those concepts into fiction, he now has the freedom to explore governance models in imagined societies without the real-world risks tied to Ethereum or other crypto ecosystems.
In his Farcaster announcement, Buterin explained that the novel will replace some of his usual essays for the time being. The project arrives at a time when many DAOs continue to struggle with governance issues such as voter apathy, treasury management concerns, and the growing influence of large token holders. These challenges have long been central themes in Buterin’s research and public discussions.
The Ethereum co-founder has previously promoted concepts like quadratic voting and pluralistic governance as potential solutions to decentralized coordination problems. Through science fiction, he can now test those ideas in dramatic scenarios involving futuristic cities, digital communities, and governance crises.
The announcement also reflects Buterin’s increasing support for decentralized social platforms like Farcaster, which he has praised for offering a more open and user-friendly alternative to traditional centralized networks.
While it remains unclear whether the project will evolve into a completed novel or stay an ongoing experiment, the sci-fi initiative gives crypto enthusiasts a fresh way to engage with decentralized governance concepts. Many Ethereum community members are already closely following the chapters, treating them almost like governance proposals for the future of blockchain ecosystems.
