Michael Saylor has responded to criticism surrounding Strategy’s recent Bitcoin sale, clarifying that his long-standing "Never Sell Your Bitcoin" message applies to individual investors rather than the treasury management of a publicly traded company.
In a post on X, the Strategy executive reaffirmed his personal commitment to Bitcoin, stating, “When I say ‘Never Sell Your Bitcoin,’ I speak as one saver to another. I have never sold mine. Not one satoshi.” Saylor stressed that his personal holdings are separate from Strategy’s corporate treasury, adding that “Strategy is a public company, not my wallet.”
He also pointed out that the company has consistently disclosed since 2020 that it “may buy or sell BTC to manage capital,” emphasizing that Strategy’s long-term conviction in Bitcoin remains unchanged despite recent transactions.
Saylor’s comments came after Strategy disclosed the sale of 1,638 BTC, sparking renewed debate over his earlier statements about never selling Bitcoin. Crypto commentator Tony Edward questioned Saylor’s explanation by replying, “Sure buddy,” while sharing an older video in which Saylor said, “We’re not gonna be selling. We’re gonna be buying Bitcoin.” The clip quickly gained traction across the crypto community as users compared the previous remarks with Strategy’s latest move.
According to a U.S. Securities and Exchange Commission (SEC) filing dated Aug. 3, Strategy sold the 1,638 BTC at a median price of $63,957 per Bitcoin. Following the transaction, the company held 842,138 BTC acquired at a total cost of $63.51 billion, with an average purchase price of $75,419 per Bitcoin.
The filing also revealed how the proceeds from the Bitcoin sale were allocated. Strategy reserved $52.4 million to pay dividends to STRC shareholders and used another $52.3 million to repurchase STRC shares under its Digital Securities Repurchase Program. In total, the company bought back 912,143 STRC shares worth $81.2 million, marking its second consecutive week of share repurchases as the stock continued trading below its $100 par value.
The transaction was Strategy’s first Bitcoin sale since early July, while its last Bitcoin purchase occurred on June 22, when it acquired 520 BTC. Despite the recent sale, the company continues to maintain one of the world’s largest corporate Bitcoin holdings.
