Anthony Scaramucci has turned U.S. Treasury Secretary Scott Bessent’s warning about soaring global debt into a fresh argument for Bitcoin, saying the remarks effectively highlighted one of the cryptocurrency’s core investment narratives.

“Bessent stood in front of the G20 and said the world is awash in debt. Bitcoin’s entire pitch is that sentence,” the SkyBridge Capital founder wrote on X on Sept. 3. Scaramucci added that finance ministers had unintentionally produced one of the strongest Bitcoin advertisements of the year.

His comments followed the G20 Finance Ministers and Central Bank Governors Meeting in Asheville, North Carolina, on Aug. 31 and Sept. 1, where Bessent focused attention on mounting sovereign debt.

Bessent was not promoting Bitcoin. Instead, the Treasury secretary argued that stronger economic growth is necessary for governments to manage the enormous debt accumulated across the global economy, particularly since the 2008 financial crisis.

“The world is awash in debt,” Bessent said, according to the Washington Examiner. He suggested that the United States and other major economies should pursue growth as a way to reduce the relative weight of their debt rather than relying primarily on spending cuts or contractionary policies.

The G20 discussions came as governments face rising borrowing costs, aging populations and sluggish productivity growth. The group's chair statement also reaffirmed its commitment to tackling challenges related to debt sustainability.

Scaramucci interpreted the discussion differently, connecting global government debt to Bitcoin’s fixed-supply monetary model. Bitcoin supporters have long argued that persistent fiscal deficits and excessive sovereign borrowing can weaken traditional currencies' purchasing power over time, increasing the appeal of scarce digital assets.

The comments arrived as Bitcoin remained near recent highs. BTC reached an intraday peak of $81,332, according to CoinGecko data.

For Scaramucci, a senior U.S. economic official publicly acknowledging the scale of global indebtedness reinforces Bitcoin’s long-standing value proposition. While Bessent’s message centered on economic growth rather than cryptocurrency, Bitcoin advocates see mounting sovereign debt as another reason investors may increasingly consider BTC as a long-term alternative asset.
