Tim Cook said he is not directing Apple’s day-to-day operations after John Ternus became CEO on Sept. 1, 2026, with Cook now helping only when requested and focusing on policy and government relations.

“I’m not meddling. I’m not a meddler,” Cook said.

Cook is now executive chairman of Apple’s board, while Ternus, previously Apple’s senior vice president of Hardware Engineering, leads the company as CEO. Cook said his current responsibilities include worldwide policy and engagement with governments.

Cook said he and Ternus have “an incredible level of trust” and that their communication needs to be frequent and significant. He also said he wanted Ternus to have “some wind at his back” before Apple’s next product cycle.

Cook advised Ternus to “make it your own job” and focus his time on areas where he could add the most value across the company.

The board unanimously approved the transition after a long-term succession-planning process. Ternus joined Apple’s product design team in 2001, became vice president of Hardware Engineering in 2013 and joined the executive team as senior vice president of Hardware Engineering in 2021.

Arthur Levinson became Apple’s lead independent director on Sept. 1, 2026, and Ternus joined the board on the same date. Cook continues to support selected areas of the company, including engagement with policymakers worldwide.
