Charles Lamanna is emerging as a potential successor to Microsoft CEO Satya Nadella as his responsibilities expand across the company’s productivity and artificial intelligence businesses.

Multiple senior Microsoft executives view Lamanna as a possible successor, but Microsoft has not announced a succession plan or named him as Nadella’s replacement. Nadella remains chief executive.

Lamanna’s broader role includes Microsoft 365, Copilot, Teams infrastructure, Dynamics 365, Exchange Online, Power Platform and AI agent technologies. Microsoft’s executive biography identifies him as executive vice president for Copilot, Agents and Platform.

Microsoft said Oct. 1 that Sumit Chauhan and Lan Ye would report to Lamanna after Ryan Roslansky announced his departure. Roslansky will remain through the end of calendar year 2026 as an adviser to Nadella.

“Sumit Chauhan and Lan Ye will report to Charles Lamanna,” Nadella said in the leadership announcement.

A March 17 restructuring also placed Lamanna among the executives leading Microsoft 365 applications and the Copilot platform. “Ryan Roslansky, Perry Clarke, and Charles Lamanna will lead M365 apps and the Copilot platform,” Nadella said at the time.

Lamanna joined Microsoft after the company acquired his startup, MetricsHub, in 2013. He later held leadership positions involving Azure, Power Platform and Dynamics 365 before taking on wider Copilot responsibilities.

Microsoft has made Anthropic’s Claude available alongside OpenAI models in parts of Copilot through its Frontier program. Lamanna described his earlier proposal to use Anthropic models in Copilot as controversial.

“At the time, that was heresy,” Lamanna said.

“But right now, I’m having quite a bit of fun making Copilot be the best product for the best price for all of our customers,” he said.
