Marissa Mayer said a harmful AI future is possible but well below an even chance, while pointing to potential medical and scientific gains as she discussed the technology’s uncertain effects at an event this week.

At the Most Powerful Women Summit in Santa Barbara, California, held Monday through Wednesday, Oct. 12-14, Mayer said no one can know for certain how AI will develop. She described a negative outcome as less likely than beneficial ones, including advances in medicine and science and more time for people to spend as they choose.

Mayer also said public sentiment in the U.S. had turned against AI and that the industry shared some responsibility for the shift. She faulted early industry messaging she viewed as too casual and linked public concern to questions about AI’s effects on jobs, families and children.

Her remarks came as Dazzle AI builds a personal assistant around photos stored on users’ phones. Launched Sept. 29, the product uses camera-roll images to infer context and identify tasks a user may want help with, including buying, fixing and planning. Recent photos can help surface possible tasks, while older images can inform personalized recommendations.

Users can give Dazzle access to their full photo library, selected photos or no photos. The product is designed to exclude images it identifies as potentially sensitive. Its approach uses details in a person’s photos to help shape suggestions and recognize tasks.

Mayer’s comments addressed both the possible benefits of AI and public unease about its broader effects, while Dazzle applies the technology to everyday planning and tasks.
