ServiceNow CFO Says Rest Should Be Part of Executive Performance
Gina Mastantuono said leaders who work 14-hour days and sleep four hours to show they work hardest and deserve the most set a damaging example.

ServiceNow President and Chief Financial Officer Gina Mastantuono urged executives to treat rest as part of performance, saying 14-hour days and four hours of sleep can model the wrong standard for colleagues.
At the Fortune Most Powerful Women Summit in Santa Barbara, California, on Tuesday, Mastantuono described leaders who use those hours to show they work hardest and deserve the most. “That is such a terrible example for the people around us,” she said. “Recovery is part of the performance; it’s not secondary.”
Mastantuono said better work-life balance has helped her take in what others say before responding and stay composed under pressure. She said those changes have helped her teams execute more effectively.
She compared recovery at work with physical training, saying muscles grow during rest after exercise rather than while a person is working out.
