Ethereum co-founder Vitalik Buterin said Ethereum’s wider contributor base is helping the network progress without requiring his constant participation, a development he views as a sign of growing independence.

At the Network State Conference, Buterin said people across the Ethereum Foundation and broader community have increasingly advanced the project and upheld its values on their own. He described that happening more often and effectively.

Buterin characterized decentralization as a shift from leadership concentrated in one person to participation by many. He said contributors should be able to advance Ethereum and uphold values such as security and privacy without relying on him.

He also described sustained public attention as difficult. Contributors, he said, have started taking initiative without waiting for him to say something first.
