Eric Schmidt Says AI Coding Tools Surpass His Skills at Age 22
He urged young people to learn coding so they can direct AI tools and judge the software they produce.

Former Google CEO Eric Schmidt said AI coding tools can produce software he could not have written as a top programmer at 22, while urging young people to learn coding so they can direct those systems.
“My field is over,” Schmidt said. He cited Claude Code, OpenAI Codex and similar tools from Google as systems that can turn requests into code.
Schmidt described future engineers as “architects” who understand how systems work, set requirements and review what AI produces. Coding knowledge, he said, helps people spot errors in AI-generated work.
The remarks add a software-specific dimension to Schmidt’s earlier warning that AI could make thousands of corporate roles unnecessary, including jobs centered on coordination.
