The Allianz adviser said earnings prospects and financial strength will shape which firms survive, while wider AI productivity gains also depend on adoption and risk controls.

Mohamed El-Erian, chief economic adviser at Allianz, views growing differences among artificial intelligence companies as a positive shift after investment initially spread broadly across the sector. “It’s a good thing that we’re seeing differentiation,” El-Erian said in an interview.

El-Erian said companies’ earnings prospects and balance-sheet strength will help determine which firms endure as the market matures. He also expects monetary tightening to weigh more heavily on housing and consumer credit than on large technology companies.

He said significant productivity gains from AI depend on frontier innovation, widespread adoption and effective risk mitigation. Of those three conditions, El-Erian said, frontier innovation is the only one progressing well.
