David Schwartz Says XRP Shirt’s 100 Marked Ledger Speed, Not Price

He said the number commemorated the XRP Ledger reaching 100 transactions per second. XRP’s price changed while the shirt was being made, adding to the confusion.

Ripple CTO Emeritus David Schwartz said the “100” on his XRP shirt marked an XRP Ledger speed milestone, clarifying that the number referred to transaction capacity rather than the token’s price.

Schwartz said the shirt was made to commemorate the XRP Ledger (XRPL) reaching 100 transactions per second (TPS). “It was created to commemorate XRPL hitting 100 TPS,” he wrote in response to a question about the shirt.

He linked the price confusion to the shirt’s production timing: XRP was around 30 cents when it was commissioned and $1 when it arrived. That sequence led people to read the “100” as a reference to XRP’s price, he said.

Historical performance tests recorded 80 TPS on Feb. 25, 2015, and 120 TPS on March 2, 2015, placing the 100 TPS figure between those results. A later test recorded sustained throughput of 1,500 TPS on July 12, 2017. Those figures describe benchmark performance, not typical live network traffic.
