Connecticut Sen. Chris Murphy's office announced Sunday that he was hospitalized after a stroke Saturday, as the sitting senator campaigned for Democrats ahead of Tuesday's midterm elections.

Murphy began experiencing numbness in his arm Saturday afternoon while at his son's hockey game and was taken to a local hospital, Chief of Staff Allison Herwitt said. Doctors found he had suffered a stroke. He was then transferred to Johns Hopkins for monitoring and is responding well to treatment, Herwitt said.

Herwitt said Murphy was awake and alert and that his doctors were encouraged by his progress. She said the office was optimistic he would make a full recovery.

Murphy, a Connecticut Democrat who entered the Senate in 2013, had been campaigning for Democratic candidates in Michigan, Minnesota and Florida. He was scheduled to join Democratic Rep. Chris Pappas in New Hampshire on Sunday. Murphy is not up for reelection Tuesday. He has also been viewed as a potential 2028 presidential candidate.
