Ukraine is taking a major step toward integrating cryptocurrency into its national financial strategy. Lawmakers in the Verkhovna Rada have introduced a bill that would allow the National Bank of Ukraine to include virtual assets like Bitcoin in its gold and foreign exchange reserves.

The bill, submitted by eight members of parliament, is primarily sponsored by Yaroslav Zheleznyak, first deputy chairman of the Committee on Finance, Tax and Customs Policy. He described the proposal as a move to align Ukraine with global financial innovations. In a statement, Zheleznyak emphasized that managing crypto reserves properly could boost macroeconomic stability and support the country’s digital economy.

The bill does not mandate the National Bank to hold cryptocurrencies but grants it the option to do so. This flexibility could be crucial as Ukraine continues to position itself as a forward-thinking player in the global digital asset space.

Although Ukraine reportedly holds over 46,000 Bitcoin—worth more than $5 billion—these holdings are attributed to civil servants and officials rather than the government itself. If the bill passes, it would mark a shift toward state-level adoption of digital assets in official reserves.

Ukraine joins a growing list of nations exploring the strategic use of cryptocurrency reserves. Just last month, Pakistan announced plans to build a national Bitcoin reserve. Meanwhile, the U.S., China, and the U.K. are among the few countries already associated with significant crypto holdings.

As interest in crypto reserves grows globally, Ukraine’s legislative push reflects increasing recognition of digital assets as tools for economic resilience and innovation.
