Trump to Host Xi in Washington for First White House Visit in More Than a Decade

Chinese President Xi Jinping’s scheduled visit to Washington puts suspended U.S.-China tariffs and technology restrictions under scrutiny as several trade measures approach a Nov. 10, 2026 deadline.
Xi will be in the United States from Sept. 23-25 for a state visit at President Donald Trump’s invitation. Trump is scheduled to greet Xi at Joint Base Andrews on Sept. 23, followed by formal White House events and talks on Sept. 24.
The visit marks Xi’s first White House visit in more than a decade. Trade and technology controls are expected to be central issues as the two countries assess whether to maintain arrangements reached in 2025.
That agreement suspended heightened U.S. reciprocal tariffs on Chinese imports until 12:01 a.m. ET (5:01 a.m. UTC) on Nov. 10, 2026. It also paused certain U.S. export-control measures and related Chinese export controls for one year beginning Nov. 10, 2025.
The official announcements do not specify the outcome of the talks or confirm a new extension. Technology restrictions, including controls involving advanced semiconductors and artificial intelligence equipment, remain part of the broader economic relationship.
The state visit is scheduled to run through Sept. 25.
