Russia’s Digital Ruble Accounts Near 200,000 in Rollout
Personal accounts nearly exceeded the central bank’s previous year-end expectation of 60,000 during the first three weeks of large-scale implementation.

Personal digital ruble accounts in Russia nearly reached 200,000 during the first three weeks of September’s large-scale rollout, exceeding the central bank’s previous year-end expectation of 60,000.
About 8,000 companies and sole proprietors also opened digital ruble accounts during the period, while 36 banks connected to the platform. Twenty-one banks joined under a legal requirement, and 15 joined voluntarily.
The digital ruble is Russia’s third legal form of currency alongside cash and bank deposits. Russia’s central bank began pilot testing in 2023 before entering large-scale rollout in September.
