Trump and Xi Begin Washington Summit on Taiwan, AI, Trade and Iran

President Donald Trump and Chinese leader Xi Jinping are set to open a Washington summit Thursday on Taiwan, artificial intelligence, trade and Iran, issues with broad geopolitical and market implications.
Trump greeted Xi at Joint Base Andrews on Wednesday evening after traveling to the Maryland military facility to welcome a foreign leader for the first time. The meeting comes as the two governments address issues spanning technology policy, trade and international security.
Trump and first lady Melania Trump are scheduled to welcome Xi and Chinese first lady Peng Liyuan at the White House before the leaders hold a bilateral meeting and review U.S. military personnel. Trump will host the Chinese delegation for a state dinner Thursday evening, with U.S. business executives expected to attend.
The summit is expected to produce few major deliverables as the leaders balance personal ties with competing policy goals. Xi’s visit is his first to Washington since September 2015.
The two presidents and first ladies are scheduled to hold a private tea Friday and visit the National Archives before Xi departs.
