U.S. and China Extend Trade Truce Through Jan. 10, 2027
The extension delays the next tariff deadline, while new goods and coal commitments offer limited progress on a broader trade dispute.
The United States and China extended their trade truce to Jan. 10, 2027, delaying the next tariff deadline while leaving broader trade and supply-chain issues unresolved after President Donald Trump and Chinese President Xi Jinping met in Washington.
U.S. Treasury Secretary Scott Bessent announced the two-month extension on Sept. 23, moving the reported expiration from Nov. 10, 2026. The arrangement gives negotiators additional time but does not establish a broader settlement.
The bilateral trade board agreed to recommend preferential tariffs for $30 billion in non-sensitive trade flowing each way. Covered U.S. exports include agricultural goods, fish and seafood, logs and wood products, cosmetics and medical devices. Covered imports from China include small appliances, toys, holiday decorations and children’s car seats.
Beijing also agreed to buy a minimum of 10 million metric tons of American coal annually in 2027 and 2028.
Chinese equities weakened after the summit, suggesting investors viewed the outcome as temporary stability rather than a comprehensive agreement. The CSI 300 fell 1.73% on Sept. 24 to close at 4,439.14.
The two governments remain engaged on supply-chain shortages involving rare earths and other critical minerals, but no completed settlement was announced. They also established a U.S.-China Super Intelligence Dialogue and agreed to create a bilateral communication channel for artificial-intelligence incidents, with the next exchange scheduled for November 2026.
The extension follows earlier U.S.-China trade-truce negotiations, keeping the next stated deadline in view as the two governments continue discussions on tariffs, non-sensitive goods and strategic supply chains.
