China Extends Overseas Travel Approval Rules to Families of Top AI Talent
Spouses and children of executives at strategically important private AI companies may need official approval for overseas trips, including short visits.
China has expanded overseas travel approval requirements to the immediate family members of executives at private artificial-intelligence companies considered critical to national security, tightening controls around strategic technology talent.
Spouses and children of affected executives may need prior government approval even for short trips abroad. Officials have begun notifying people subject to the policy and are expected to broaden the list of AI professionals covered by the restrictions.
The move extends travel controls beyond the individuals working directly on sensitive AI projects.
China’s updated State Council regulation on exit and entry administration took effect Sept. 15. The rules provide for overseas travel restrictions linked to conduct considered harmful to national, industrial or technological security.
