Sanders, Casar Seek AI Pause as Musk Adopts Trump’s “SI” Term
The proposal would halt development and deployment of advanced AI until a dedicated federal oversight agency is established.
A proposed U.S. bill would force a pause on advanced artificial intelligence development and deployment until Congress establishes a federal agency dedicated to overseeing the technology.
Sen. Bernie Sanders and Rep. Greg Casar introduced the measure as President Donald Trump promotes “superintelligence,” or “SI,” as a replacement term for artificial intelligence. Elon Musk and several other technology leaders have adopted the new wording in discussions about the industry.
Trump has called “AI” a “false” term and said the change would improve public perceptions of the technology. The proposal from Sanders and Casar would apply to related systems before a specialized regulator is in place.
The terminology shift has also appeared in crypto markets. A Solana-ecosystem meme coin named SI briefly exceeded a $59 million market capitalization and had a market value of $40.69 million at 9:37 p.m. ET Tuesday, up 85.78% over 24 hours.
The dispute centers on whether systems described as superintelligence should continue advancing without a dedicated federal oversight structure. The proposed pause would remain in place until that agency is established.
