UK FCA Opens Crypto Authorization Applications Under New Guidance
The framework covers stablecoin issuance, trading platforms, custody and staking-related services before taking effect Oct. 25, 2027.

The Financial Conduct Authority (FCA), the United Kingdom’s financial regulator, opened applications Sept. 30 for crypto firms seeking authorization under the country’s new regulatory framework, bringing a wider range of digital-asset activities into its oversight.
The application window runs through Feb. 28, 2027, for firms seeking to use transitional arrangements. Existing registrations and permissions will not automatically convert into authorization under the new regime.
The FCA’s guidance covers issuing qualifying stablecoins, operating cryptoasset trading platforms, dealing and arranging transactions, safeguarding cryptoassets and arranging staking services. Firms already registered under the United Kingdom’s anti-money-laundering framework may also need to apply for authorization or seek additional permissions.
The new regime is scheduled to take effect Oct. 25, 2027, under the Financial Services and Markets Act 2000 (Cryptoassets) Regulations 2026. The FCA plans to consult on targeted updates to its guidance in October.
