The United Kingdom opened its first comprehensive authorization process for cryptoasset firms on Sept. 30, beginning a transition to mandatory oversight that will affect companies serving the country’s digital-asset market.

The Financial Conduct Authority (FCA) will accept applications through Feb. 28, 2027. Firms that want to continue providing regulated cryptoasset services in the UK must apply during the window and meet requirements covering consumer protection, customer-asset custody, market integrity and financial resilience.

The new framework takes effect Oct. 25, 2027. The FCA has stressed that filing an application is not the same as receiving authorization. Firms that do not satisfy the standards will not be allowed to continue providing regulated cryptoasset services in the UK.

The application deadline comes before the regime’s start date, giving existing firms a defined period to seek approval ahead of full implementation.
