Trump Unveils Voluntary AI Accord Signed by OpenAI, Google and Nvidia
The pact calls for internal controls, independent audits and board oversight but sets no penalties or government enforcement mechanism.
President Donald Trump announced Tuesday that he and executives from six major technology companies had signed a voluntary AI safety accord designed to make companies police their most advanced systems.
Trump called the White House Accord on Super Intelligence “morally binding,” but the agreement sets no penalties or government enforcement mechanism. It asks companies to monitor model capabilities and alignment, establish internal oversight teams, appoint independent external auditors and create independent board committees.
The signatories include OpenAI President Greg Brockman, Google CEO Sundar Pichai, Nvidia CEO Jensen Huang, Anthropic CEO Dario Amodei, Meta CEO Mark Zuckerberg and xAI founder Elon Musk.
The accord focuses on cybersecurity, biosecurity and chemical threats. It also calls for safeguards against models accessing technical systems in unintended ways. The standards may eventually be incorporated into laws or regulations, but the document does not set compliance deadlines or reporting requirements.
Trump said companies should “self-police” and pledged not to suppress the technology’s growth. He posted the accord at 5:24 p.m. ET (21:24 UTC) Sept. 29.
The White House separately issued an executive order the same day directing federal agencies to use “Super Intelligence” and “SI” instead of “Artificial Intelligence” and “AI” in most official communications.
