SEC Chair Paul Atkins and Commissioner Mark T. Uyeda said Hester Peirce’s advocacy helped set the Securities and Exchange Commission’s course toward a digital-asset framework ahead of her planned Oct. 2 departure.

Peirce served on the SEC staff from 2000 to 2008 and returned to the agency as a commissioner in 2018. Atkins and Uyeda credited her with pressing for clearer rules for entrepreneurs and challenging regulation through enforcement.

Peirce led the SEC’s Crypto Task Force. Atkins and Uyeda said the agency’s continuing work on a framework for digital assets would carry the influence of her leadership.

After Peirce leaves, Atkins and Uyeda will be the SEC’s two remaining commissioners. The SEC’s leadership after Peirce’s departure will include three commissioners across the SEC and Commodity Futures Trading Commission combined.
