Illinois officials and crypto industry organizations have jointly asked a Sangamon County judge to delay a planned 0.2% tax on cryptocurrency transactions and wallet transfers, pushing its start date back six months if approved.

The request would shift the planned effective date from Jan. 1, 2027, to July 1, 2027. The change depends on the judge’s approval.

The tax covers buying or selling cryptocurrency and moving crypto assets between wallets. It applies whether the activity results in a profit or a loss.

The judge’s decision will determine whether the tax starts Jan. 1 or July 1, 2027.
