Thousands of Spaniards marched over the country’s housing crisis, bringing the issue to the center of debate ahead of Spain’s early general election on Nov. 29.

The demonstrations honored Maricarmen Abascal, 87, who died after being hospitalized following her eviction from her Madrid home. Her death has intensified scrutiny of housing policies as the issue becomes pivotal in the election campaign.

Prime Minister Pedro Sánchez called the early election as housing concerns continue to shape political debate. The vote will determine the makeup of Spain’s next government and comes as housing affordability remains a major public concern.

The protests add to the political attention surrounding housing policy before voters go to the polls. A housing-focused general strike is expected on Nov. 11, creating another potential flashpoint ahead of the election.

The election is scheduled for Nov. 29.
