European Union tech chief Henna Virkkunen said the bloc is equipped to address risks from highly capable artificial intelligence models, including fears that rogue AI agents could move beyond human control.

“We have our AI Act in place and the AI Act covers the whole life cycle of these models,” Virkkunen said in a Friday interview.

The AI Act regulates artificial intelligence according to risk levels and was adopted two years ago. Virkkunen rejected criticism that the framework is outdated.

European regulators are providing guidance to companies on how to evaluate their models, factoring in recommendations from 60 AI experts, she said.

In late August, the European Commission asked more than 30 AI companies to describe the safeguards they use to protect their systems. Virkkunen said she is assessing the responses.

Global concerns have grown following incidents involving OpenAI and Anthropic, along with fears that rogue AI agents could move beyond human control.
