Apple is seeking to overturn a $5.7 billion patent verdict in favor of Taction Technology, arguing that the damages award lacks evidentiary support and that the patents are invalid.

A federal jury in San Diego found that haptic technology in iPhones and Apple Watches infringed two Taction patents covering vibration-based touch feedback. Taction sued Apple in 2021.

The verdict followed a dispute over whether Apple’s devices used technology covered by Taction’s patents. Apple has said its Taptic Engine differs from the patented technology.

The award is not final. The trial judge must rule on Apple’s post-trial motion before the case proceeds through the appeals process. The dispute follows the jury’s order that Apple pay more than $5.7 billion.
