France is pressing for European Union (EU) taxes on crypto assets as leaders from the bloc’s 27 member states open negotiations on the 2028-34 budget, aiming to expand shared revenue while resisting steep spending cuts.

The talks began Oct. 15 amid disagreements over the budget’s size and possible new revenue sources. The proposed plan covers seven years, from 2028 through 2034. France’s tax push also includes digital services and online gambling, alongside crypto assets.

France has called for an EU-level tax on crypto assets. The European Parliament previously proposed exploring a tax on crypto-asset capital gains.

EU leaders want an agreement by year-end. Adoption of new taxes would require unanimous approval from member states.
