The sinking of a container ship in the Strait of Hormuz has added to regional tensions, alongside fatal attacks on Saudi Arabia, as Iran's leaders press demands on Washington.

President Donald Trump said Oct. 8 that he would not resume strikes on Iran before the Nov. 3 midterm elections, even as regional incidents continue.

Iran-backed Houthis have carried out fatal attacks in Saudi Arabia.

Iranian Parliament Speaker Mohammad Bagher Ghalibaf said Tehran would combine military and defensive capabilities with negotiations and regional leverage to press its demands.

Those demands have included lifting the U.S. naval blockade and sanctions and withdrawing U.S. forces from the region.

The conflict has also coincided with soaring energy prices and wider cost pressures for Americans.
