Australia has released draft legislation that would establish domestic tax reporting for crypto assets and bring an international reporting framework into law ahead of planned data exchanges in 2028.

The exposure draft would incorporate the Organisation for Economic Co-operation and Development’s (OECD) Crypto-Asset Reporting Framework (CARF) into Australian law. It would also create domestic tax reporting rules for crypto assets. CARF is an international framework for crypto tax reporting and information exchange.

Public comments are open through Oct. 28, 2026. Australia expects to begin automatically exchanging crypto tax information internationally in 2028.

As of Sept. 14, 2026, 77 jurisdictions had committed to implement CARF, with first exchanges planned from 2027 to 2029.

The same draft's platform reporting requirement would cover transactions involving Australian residents from July 2027.
