Brindisi Cuts Waste Services as Freight Stoppages Continue in Calabria, Sicily
Andria warned that fuel and disposal problems could affect collection, while Bari’s mayor warned of limited service capacity.

Brindisi’s waste-service cuts in Apulia coincide with 120-hour freight stoppages in Calabria and Sicily, while Andria warns ongoing fuel and disposal problems could significantly affect collection.
Under the order, residents could not use Brindisi’s municipal waste centers from Oct. 17 to 20; mechanical sweeping stopped, and garden-waste collection was put on hold pending review.
In Andria, the waste contractor has faced growing difficulty obtaining fuel and has sometimes been unable to deliver waste to disposal facilities. The city warned that service could be significantly affected if the problems continued beyond Oct. 15.
Bari Mayor Vito Leccese warned Friday that the city had “less than a week of autonomy” for waste collection and five or six days for local public transport. His warning described a risk, not a confirmed service interruption.
Registered 120-hour freight stoppages covered Calabria and Sicily from 6:01 p.m. ET Oct. 15 (10:01 p.m. UTC) through 6 p.m. ET Oct. 20 (10 p.m. UTC). Apulia was not included in the listed stoppages, although municipal notices there describe local service risks.
Calabria’s regional government approved €15 million in fuel-cost aid on Oct. 14, allocating €5 million to agricultural businesses and €10 million to road-freight businesses.
