Meta Removes AI Training Reference From Planned Website Crawling Terms

The change follows concerns that broad wording in the planned Commercial Terms could reach news pages. The terms are scheduled to take effect Oct. 30.

Meta removed a planned reference to training from terms governing automated website access, addressing concerns that broad wording might cover news pages tied to businesses.

An earlier version listed training among potential uses of material from domains, pages and URLs associated with business users. The revised terms are scheduled to take effect Oct. 30, 2026.

Meta spokesperson Daniel Roberts said the change clarifies that the terms concern advertising and business products and does not change crawler practices. “As always, content owners can use robots.txt to signal their preferences.”

The concern focused on what the contract might allow; it does not establish that Meta used the clause to collect news content. The removed training reference was part of Meta’s planned website-crawling terms.
