South Korea plans to meet with five crypto exchanges and DAXA on Tuesday, Oct. 20, to discuss a tax framework scheduled to take effect in January 2027. The planned 22% combined rate would apply to qualifying annual taxable income from crypto transfers and lending after a 2.5 million won basic deduction.

Representatives from Upbit, Bithumb, Coinone, DigitalX and Gopax are expected to join the discussion with DAXA. The planned start of the tax system has been delayed three times.

Industry concerns focus on tax treatment for staking, airdrops and decentralized finance (DeFi) activity, as well as the infrastructure needed to administer the rules. Industry calls for another delay have followed those concerns.

A proposed amendment from a Democratic Party lawmaker would move taxation to 2029. The government is continuing preparations for the planned January 2027 start.
