China Proposes Export Limits on 12 Solar Manufacturing Technologies

The toughest proposed controls target thin-wafer production, perovskite and tandem cells, and fluidized-bed polysilicon processes.

China’s proposed export controls would cover 12 technologies used to make solar equipment, potentially complicating plans to build or expand manufacturing facilities outside the country.

The tightest proposed limits concern thin-wafer production, perovskite and tandem solar cells, and fluidized-bed methods for making polysilicon. TOPCon, HJT and XBC technologies would face comparatively lighter restrictions.

Reduced access to manufacturing expertise could increase costs for producers outside China and slow factory upgrades. The proposal could also strengthen China’s position in the global solar supply chain.
