White House Crypto Adviser Vacancy Raises Questions for 2027 Agenda
Patrick Witt’s departure leaves no publicly named successor. Tax reform, market-structure rules and a stablecoin framework could return to Congress’s agenda in 2027.

Patrick Witt’s departure as executive director of the White House’s digital-assets advisory council leaves its crypto-policy leadership post without a publicly named successor as bills could return to Congress’s agenda in 2027.
Witt’s temporary assignment ended with the expiration of his White House detail, and he returned to the private sector. He led the President’s Council of Advisors for Digital Assets, a central contact point for the administration’s work with the crypto industry. No replacement for the post has been publicly identified.
His departure followed earlier exits by Harry Jung and Bo Hines from White House digital-asset policy roles. Witt had been a prominent administration voice on crypto proposals, including the CLARITY Act and a strategic Bitcoin (BTC) reserve, as well as discussions with exchange executives. It remains unclear who, if anyone, will serve as the administration’s crypto-policy liaison with lawmakers from both parties.
Federal regulatory work continues. The Securities and Exchange Commission, Commodity Futures Trading Commission (CFTC), Office of the Comptroller of the Currency (OCC) and Treasury Department are pursuing digital-asset policy work. Michael Passalacqua of the CFTC has described an administrative fallback that would use agency rules to address oversight gaps while congressional action is delayed.
The Digital Asset Market Clarity Act (CLARITY Act) remains a focus for President Donald Trump. The bill is stalled. Its legislative path could depend in part on the next Congress, which takes office in 2027.
Tax reform, digital-asset market-structure rules and a stablecoin framework could return as 2027 legislative priorities. They remain possible agenda items, rather than guaranteed legislative action. November’s midterm elections are another factor: if Democrats win control of the House, the administration could face a more difficult environment for advancing legislation.
For now, federal agencies continue their work while the White House has no publicly named successor to Witt. Crypto proposals could return to congressional focus when the new Congress begins in 2027.
