A Democratic win in either chamber in the Nov. 3 midterm elections would give the party a stronger role in AI oversight when the new Congress begins Jan. 3, 2027.

Control of the House or Senate would give Democrats committee leadership in that chamber and more resources for investigations. The party would then face a choice about how to approach artificial intelligence policy. The election outcome and any subsequent policy decisions remain open.

AI companies have prepared for possible congressional scrutiny if a serious AI-related cyberattack causes a major disruption. That planning considers questions about company safeguards and a possible congressional response. It also treats stronger pressure from Democrats after the midterms as a possibility, rather than a decision lawmakers have made.

The next step is the Nov. 3 election. Any change in committee leadership would take effect when the new Congress begins Jan. 3, 2027.
