Collegium Paid $17 Million to Settle Nucynta ER Patent Dispute
The Oct. 15 payment ended a license Collegium assumed in 2020 and discharged its royalty obligations under that agreement.

Collegium Pharmaceutical, Inc. paid Grünenthal GmbH $17 million to settle a U.S. patent dispute over an authorized generic of Nucynta ER, ending the related license and its royalty payments.
The companies signed the settlement on Oct. 15, and the license ended that day after Collegium made the payment. The agreement also resolves other claims between them.
Grünenthal sued Collegium in federal court in New Jersey in February, alleging patent infringement connected to the launch of the authorized generic of Nucynta ER. Nucynta ER is an extended-release tapentadol pain medication.
The U.S. license at issue was dated Jan. 13, 2015. Collegium assumed it in 2020 as part of its acquisition of Nucynta ER and Nucynta IR. The settlement discharged Collegium’s royalty obligations under that license.
Grünenthal assigned certain patents related to the Nucynta products to Collegium. It also filed a motion to dismiss the patent lawsuit.
