The U.K.'s North Sea Transition Authority approved production at the Jackdaw gas field on Oct. 21, bringing a domestic supply project closer to startup as household energy bills rise.

The oil and gas regulator granted development and production consent after Energy Secretary Miatta Fahnbulleh agreed it could do so. Adura operates the field off northeastern Scotland.

At peak output, Jackdaw could raise U.K. domestic gas production by about 6%. Its output at that level could match the heating needs of roughly 1.4 million U.K. homes. The field could operate for up to 11 years.

The approval comes after the energy price cap for a typical household paying by direct debit rose 4% for the Oct. 1–Dec. 31, 2026, quarter. Higher wholesale gas prices drove the increase.

A Scottish court overturned Jackdaw's earlier consent in January 2025 because the environmental assessment had not considered emissions from burning the extracted gas. The ruling permitted development activity to continue during the consent review.

Gas could begin flowing as early as the end of October.
