Colombia’s Fiscalía General de la Nación announced the detention of eight people sought in U.S. extradition cases, including one connected to a separate New York matter involving alleged virtual-currency laundering.

The operations took place in Bogotá, Barranquilla, Cajicá and Maicao. Seven people are tied to a case in Puerto Rico. Nassim Orfale Vásquez, detained in Barranquilla, is connected to a separate case in New York.

The U.S. District Court for the Southern District of New York case alleges that Orfale laundered drug proceeds through virtual currencies. That matter is separate from the Puerto Rico case.

Six people connected to the Puerto Rico matter were detained in Colombia on Oct. 21. Juan Daniel Arenas Uribe had been detained in Colombia on Oct. 14.
