South Korea Pushes Planned 22% Crypto Tax Back for Fourth Time
Annual income from virtual-asset transfers and lending would be taxed at a combined 22% after a 2.5 million won exemption.

South Korea’s presidential office has pushed back the start of a planned tax on virtual-asset income for a fourth time, delaying a levy that had been scheduled to take effect Jan. 1, 2027.
The tax framework was established in a 2020 revision to South Korea’s Income Tax Act. Its start date was first set for 2022 and later shifted to 2023, 2025 and 2027.
The measure would apply to annual income from virtual-asset transfers and lending after a 2.5 million won exemption. Income above that threshold would face a combined 22% rate, including other income tax and local income tax.
The latest delay follows earlier debate over South Korea’s 2027 crypto tax timetable.
